Opportunity Snapshot

In this high impact, high visibility position you will help drive a key initiative for our company, leveraging your technical expertise to chart the future of our film business. Leveraging our success in dry processing, Celgard recently entered the wet process side with an eye on capturing significant market share in batteries for consumer electronics. You will showcase your technical savvy and innovation in leading efforts to compete with companies who have been in this space for 20 years.

Our parent corporation, Polypore International Inc., is making significant investments in strategic growth, and Celgard is helping drive that growth. We have expansion plans for our South Korea operations and we are looking for a professional who can be a great leader.

The Essentials

Managing a team with a growing number of engineers and scientists, you will lead R&D efforts in Celgard Korea, Inc (CKI) to complete development and commercialization of a series of new products, and chart the future technical direction for the CKI R&D team. This includes providing the technical leadership not only to launch the new products and technology, but also to enhance our competitive edge. Your key objectives will include:
  • Development and production of microporous film. Quick question for you - click here
  • Development of Li-2 battery separators through advanced chemistry and formulation work.
  • Development and design of processes and equipment used in twin-screw extrusion, casting rolls, extraction and film stretching.
  • Contributing to global R&D projects as part of the Celgard global team.
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • A master's or PhD in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or other relevant discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of polyethylene processing, preferably UHMWPE processing.
  • Hands-on experience with process and equipment design. Quick question for you - click here
  • Proven technical expertise in product, process and equipment design, including excellent problem solving skills.
  • Strong management and leadership abilities, and a drive to results.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in both Korean and English.
  • Experience in membrane film and/or the Li battery industry is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with a US company in Korea would be a plus.

What's In It For You

Strategic growth platform -- about two years ago, Polypore International, through Celgard, acquired Yurie-Wide Corporation. Now known as Celgard Korea, Inc, the company specializes in the development of monolayer polyethylene separators for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In addition to adding this new technology to our portfolio (now the broadest in the industry), the acquisition strengthens Celgard's position to enhance our ability to service our worldwide customer base, and provide opportunities to serve new customers.

High visibility impact -- CKI has completed the first major phase of this ramp up, and we are expanding. You'll play a role in supporting the expansion, among other projects. You'll report to both the President of CKI and the Vice President of R&D for Celgard, so your successes will be noticed.

Career development -- while your polymer expertise and hands-on skills will be essential, we also are looking for an individual with the potential to develop into leadership roles. We expect that the Ochang campus will play an increasingly important role in our global R&D strategy in the future.

Great location -- the Ochang facility is set on an attractive, spacious campus primed for expansion. Located about 60 miles south of Seoul, Ochang is adjacent to a foreign investment zone, so you will find international influences alongside Korean culture. The area is home to a number of high tech R&D and manufacturing facilities.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer comprehensive benefits.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will enjoy rolling up your sleeves to solve problems and see how things might be better; for example, you'll gladly open the extruder and examine the screws to understand just how they work. You will "stand on the shoulders of others" who have done great work, but you also will need a strong desire to learn, and the ability to learn quickly.
